Sicaria In The City

Last week I had a surprise visit from Khushbu Sikaria, of the sicaria, at Madison Square Market, where I was promoting my holiday collection for IndieShop.com. Khushbu, who is also the founder of sicaria.com, a luxury fashion e-tailer launching soon, was visiting designers in NYC + enjoying herself in the Big Apple! She suggested a video presentation of my holiday collection might be fun for her blog, so I did my best not to sound too silly.

Cynthia Rybakoff Collection, Modern Vintage Charm Necklace

Not wanting to fully embrace the fall fashion season just yet, here are some late summer offerings, made from vintage and recycled organic components, including stone, raffia, wood, coral and bone. The aqua-celadon green and salmon-ivory color palettes transition well into early fall's neutral mood, including my new favorite shade of brown, burnt sienna.

For more stunningly sustainable jewels, including my Modern Vintage Charm Bracelet visit ecco*eco for a round up of Summer 2010's ethical style gems!

EcoFABulous!

On June 19th, in chic and sustainable style, The Green Gala will highlight local produce, products and production on Long Island's East End. With a farm-to-table approach, local farmers, growers and celebrity chefs will utilize and promote the fabulous bounty of the Hamptons.

Browse an exciting array of green-focused auction items, during the cocktail hour, including this necklace I created especially for the event. Composed of recycled and vintage materials including Chinese bone carvings, Indian carnelian briolettes, raffia beads from the Philippines and delicate Japanese deep sea coral branches, it will hopefully encourage guests to give and go green! Read more about this eco-fabulous event and purchase tickets here.

Wisteria Lane

There's a real Wisteria Lane located in a forgotten alley in Greenwich Village, and it was the perfect location to shoot my Spring 2010 Collection look book!

The Washington Mews originally housed stables but was converted to housing in the 1930's. We choose the loveliest home for the shoot, with shell pink doors and fragrant bunches of wisteria climbing the facade on woody vines. The flowers happened to be in full bloom, which only lasts a few weeks each year... Dinah, the cat who lives there, came out to say hello to the visitors.

This particular house has a unique story. It was once the home of Gertrude Vanderbuilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney museum which was originally located just around the corner on 8th Street!

It also had a cozy bedroom for her niece Gloria Vanderbilt, who would stay with her aunt during school breaks. Gloria painted this wonderful picture from memory of her aunt's home, for New York Magazine, when they published an article about this converted carriage house!

Lady Treats

Do I have your attention yet? Good. It's no secret, I'm addicted to sweet things, and my favorite treat is rainbow cookies. These tri-colored confections look particularly yummy, gracing the cover of Edible East End magazine, and they're vegan! Made in Montauk by Gurney's Beach Bakery, the line of healthy baked goods is available at local IGA's and Schmidt's in Southampton.

This spring I've also got a sweet tooth for candy colored stones, which seem just right for the prevailing fashionable mood of soft pastels and tinted neutrals. Case in point, my Sweet Spiked Collar from the Sticky Sweet collection. Made from kunzite, a rare semi-precious stone, its delicate and tender hues of lemon, rose and lilac are both feminine and seductive.

Crystal Palace

Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace of 1851 was grand cast-iron and glass building erected in Hyde Park, London, England. It's revolutionary modern design referenced the great cathedrals of antiquity with it's monumental and awe inspiring presence.

Another magnificent crystal palace, albeit fictional, is Superman's frozen Fortress of Solitude, the  inspiration for my super popular sterling silver and crystal spike Fortress Of Solitude Series.

The Fortress Of Solitude Series available exclusively at Supermarket.

Here's my Smallville hero Clark in his Arctic fortress and a certain superwoman wearing the Fortress Of Solitude necklace with super styling!

Good news for Superman fans, the fortress actually exists! This awesome image is from a giant crystal cave called Cueva de los Cristales in Mexico..

Lovebirds

The term lovebirds was used as early as the 16th century to describe a couple with a tendency for PDA. Lovebirds and doves remain popular symbols in Western culture, representing love and fidelity. A bird is also slang, used by blokes looking upon the fairer sex with a slightly more carnal eye. With that in mind here are some avian inspired goodies for the season of love.

A very feminine amethyst and pink tourmaline partridge charm necklace and dangling partridge charm ring make cute love tokens for your bird on Valentine’s Day.

In nature lovebirds are a small and social species of parrots, noted for human-like affection for their mate. Lovebirds sleep sitting side-by-side and turn their faces in towards each other, like the pair on this note card by Handmade On Peconic Bay.

Cynthia Rybakoff sterling silver Love Bird Necklace, $48.00 on Supermarket and Shopflick. Mrs. Partridge sterling silver charm ring, $28.00, on Supermarket. Love Birds note card by Cynthia Rybakoff for Handmade on Peconic Bay, $3.50 at Supermarket and Etsy.

My Stars!

The holiday season is in full swing, so it’s a good time to take a step back from the shopping madness and whirlwind of social events crammed into a few short weeks, and contemplate the universe for just a moment. But that’s literally impossible to do in New York City, where the grid is brightly lit 24/7, canceling out any perspective of the actual night sky. I do love a crisp starry night, and just once I’d like to spend the holidays in a true winter wonderland, dashing through the snow and taking lovely after dinner strolls along Main Street, gazing up at the stars.

I’ve always been fascinated by the night sky, so naturally stars are a favorite motif of mine, ever since I first saw this particular star illustration (top), by my first artist crush Peter Max. Not long ago, I found these ultra-pure blue lapis star shaped beads (above), and it was love at first sight! Not only did they remind me of my favorite Peter Max illustration, but the phrase “blue is celestial” just popped into my mind and I pictured a cascade of falling blue lapis stars jewels.

Stars are also favored by Kelsey Merritt, who incidentally IS a rising star in the pop music biz. Kelsey and the Chaos! has been ripping through stages and exciting fans all over the country, so be sure to preview their smoking hot new single “Life Goes On”, and buy it on iTunes December 15th, when you’ll also get Kelsey’s very cool cover of “Santa Baby” free with your purchase. Kelsey was a guest model for my Blue Is Collection, and here she is wearing her own star patterned top with my Blue Is Celestial lapis star earrings and necklace. Can one wear too many stars? I think not.

Cynthia Rybakoff Blue Is Celestial oxidized silver and lapis star earrings, $78 and necklace, $110 at Supermarket and Shopflick.

On The Road

Some good friends just left for Italy, which left me thinking…a European trip would be just the thing to inspire some fresh ideas. I’d rummage around curiosity shops in the Old City, snatching up kitschy souvenirs, like these cool vintage silver European travel charms. The hand painted tiny shield charms typically featured miniature scenes or heraldic motifs and date from the 1940’s though the 1970’s. I just adore the bright mix of enamel colors!
